Scott Patterson Recalls Jerry Seinfeld's One-Sentence Response to His Nerve-Racking “Seinfeld” Audition

In April 2026, Scott Patterson made an appearance on FOX 29's late-night program, MIKE, with Mike Jerrick

NEED TO KNOW

  • During the episode, the 67-year-old actor recalled his fast-moving audition for Seinfeld nearly three decades ago

  • Patterson also shared how landing that role ultimately helped launch his career

For many viewers,Scott Pattersonis forever tied to his role onGilmore Girls, where his portrayal ofLuke Danesbecame a fan favorite. But long before Stars Hollow, Patterson made a memorable appearance on another iconic series that helped shape his early career.

In a sit-downinterview with Mike Jerrickon FOX 29's late-night program,MIKE, Patterson revisited the fast-moving moment that landed him on an episode ofSeinfeldin 1995.

“So, it was a Saturday audition at MTM Studios, CBS Radford, went in, read forJerry [Seinfeld]— he was in the room. He was at a desk, sitting behind a desk,” Patterson recalled. “Larry Davidwas there. Howard [West] was there, George Shapiro, I think. And I just read with Mark Hirsfeld, who's a casting director.”

Patterson had no idea Seinfeld and David would be sitting in on the audition, so it admittedly caught him a bit off guard to walk in and see them both there.

"I had to swallow and say, 'Okay, this is real,'" he reflected.

From there, everything unfolded at a surprisingly quick pace. After the audition was over, Patterson remembers Seinfeld saying to him, “You're a very funny young man” — and that's it.

“And I left, and Monday I was on the set,” the 67-year-old revealed.

That quick turnaround landed Patterson in a season 7 episode ofSeinfeldcalled “The Sponge,” where he played Billy, a confident and attentive businessman who becomes one of Elaine Benes' romantic interests.

The storyline centers on Elaine carefully rationing her limited supply of discontinued contraceptive sponges, forcing her to evaluate whether her partners are worthy of using one. Billy, determined to prove himself, rises to the occasion as Elaine weighs his overall qualities before ultimately deeming him “spongeworthy.”

When reflecting on his time working alongsideJulia Louis-Dreyfus, Patterson spoke highly of the experience.

“She was great. She was very helpful. You know, she got me to calm down a little bit. ‘Cause I was a little…I was nervous,” he admitted. “I mean, it's like you're coming onto the set of thebestcomedy actors in the world, in television. And they want you to be great. They want you to come up to their level, which is impossible.”

Looking back at his time onSeinfeld, Patterson sees the role as a defining early milestone that opened doors for him across the industry, including landingGilmore Girlsjust five years later.

“I mean, to do [Seinfeld] really legitimizes you, and it puts you on the map for all the other casting directors in town,” Patterson told Jerrick. “So I started booking other things, and it just, you know, it sort of takes time, you know? But that's a great launching pad. For a lot of people, that show served to launch their careers.”

“My daughter — who is now 41 — and I were obsessed with Michael Jackson,” he said. “When she was 4 years old, [she] wanted my son, [Alex Mandel], who's 36 — when my wife was pregnant with him — she wanted us to name our son Michael Jackson.”

TheAmerica's Got Talenthost went on to say that he once brought Shultz to meet the late pop star, who died in 2009at the age of 50. However, she was too starstruck to speak.

“We took her to meet him one day and she just couldn't talk, and she was terrified. And he was so sweet and wonderful with her,” Howie recalled.

“So it was an epic time where I wanted her to know that that's Michael Jackson and not her brother,” he added jokingly.

Howie and Shultz's father-daughter connection has extended into adulthood as the pair co-host theHowie Mandel Does Stuffpodcast, which they started during the pandemic.

In 2021,Howie told PEOPLEthat the project started as an endeavor to connect with one another.

“He was strict. And there was a lot of hovering. We had trouble getting along in those times,” she admitted.

However, Shultz, who is also a television personality, said that it was extremely helpful having a parent who had her same condition.

"My dad is very open aboutgoing to therapyand erasing the stigma. Whenever I was upset or sad or having a bad day, I knew I could reach out,” she recalled.

Spirit Airlines shutting down after failed effort at government rescue deal

Traveler arrives for Spirit Airlines flight, learns the company has shut down 02:57

CBS News

Spirit Airlines announced early Saturday morning that it was ceasing operations after the budget carrier failed to secure a$500 million federal bailout.

Spirit Aviation Holdings, the airline's parent company, said in a news release that it "regretfully announced" that it had "started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately."

"All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport," the airline said, adding that it would automatically process refunds for any flight that was purchased through the airline with a credit or debit card.

Department of TransportationSecretary Sean Duffy said Saturday that Spirit has a reserve fund to refund tickets to the original form of payment for travelers whose flights have been cancelled. People who booked with a third party, like a travel agent, should contact their point of purchase, Duffy said. The airline hasset up a websiteto answer questions regarding the shutdown process.

Some of Spirit's bondholders, including Ken Griffin's Citadel and Ares Management Corp., had opposed the deal, U.S. officials previously told CBS News. Duffy said that a "creditor issue" ultimately prevented a rescue plan.

"In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business," Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in Saturday's statement. "However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company."

Rising prices left "no choice," airline says

The Florida-based airline, which has filed twice for bankruptcy since 2024, recently faced surging costs injet fueldue tothe Iran war.

The "recent material increase in oil prices" brought on by the Iran war and "other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook," the airline said in its statement. "With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."

Duffy disputed this version of events, highlighting Spirit's bankruptcy filings.

"Spirit was in dire straits long before the war with Iran," Duffy said, adding that the airline's low-cost model "wasn't working."

The Trump administration's proposed bailout would have given the U.S. government a90% stake in the airline. Spirit's cash reserves had dwindled in recent days as talks with the government broke down, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions. Duffy said President Trump "was like a dog on a bone trying to figure out a way to keep Spirit afloat," but that "in the end, a deal couldn't be reached."

The airline industry faces higher costs due to rising energy prices, prompting carriers to raise fares and cut unprofitable routes. A new Deutsche Bank forecast predicts U.S. passenger airlines' annual fuel bill increasing $24 billion, relative to a forecast made before the start of the Iran war. While the bank believes airlines will be able to generate $14 billion more in revenue to offset those costs, they predict airlines will earn $8.4 billion less than previously expected.

By the time of Spirit's first bankruptcy filing in November 2024, the company had lost more than $2.5 billion since the start of 2020. In 2025, Spirit cut almost 4,000 jobs and 200 underperforming routes, ending the year with about 7,500 employees, including 2,000 pilots and 3,000 flight attendants, according to its latestannual report.

Spirit again filed for bankruptcy in August 2025 and disclosed in a regulatory filing that it had "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operating.

"No frills" flying

Liquidating Spirit will bring an end to an airline known for its bright yellow planes and rock-bottom fares. The company's roots go back to 1983, when the airline wasspun offfrom a trucking company. Initially called Charter One, the airline rebranded in 1992 as Spirit Airlines and added more planes and routes. The company shifted to a "no frills" approach to travel in 2007, according to its union.

Trump administration officials were told that Spirit would wind down operations within 24 hours, CBS News learned Friday from people familiar with the matter. They confirmed that the White House would not make a last-ditch effort to save the airline.

When President Trump was asked about a bailout for Spirit Airlines on Friday, he said, "Well, I guess we're looking at it. If we can do it, we'll do it, but only if it's a good deal."

Davis in his statement thanked the Trump administration and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for "their extraordinary efforts to try to preserve jobs and service across the country."

Spirit flew to more than 40 cities in the U.S., with a main hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, and had international routes to the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Industry reaction

Reactions to Spirit's announcement came fast on Saturday. United Airlineslaunched a webpageproviding capped fares to Spirit customers. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Delta Airlines also announced reduced fares for affected Spirit travelers, according to the Department of Transportation.

To alleviate concerns about higher prices, some airlines will continue to offer reduced fares on former high-volume Spirit routes for all passengers, the department said.

"This is the airline industry stepping up and trying to provide relief as Spirit is going to go through this liquidation," Duffy said.

American Airlines, which serves 70 of the 72 airports Spirit flew from, said it was "reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity," including larger aircraft and adding flights on popular routes. The airline also said it was working to provide transportation for Spirit employees who had been displaced while working.

American Airlines said it was preparing to launch a jobs page specifically for Spirit staff members. United Airlines will launch a similar effort, the Department of Transportation said.

How “Toy Story 5” recast Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head after the late Don Rickles and Estelle Harris (exclusive)

Toy Story 5 marks the first film without Don Rickles and Estelle Harris as the voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Key Points

  • Director Andrew Stanton talks through the process of recasting the characters with Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino.

  • Tom Hanks shares the story of how his kids met Rickles for the first time.

Toy Story 5, in addition to being the firstToy Storymovie directed byPixarcreativeAndrew Stanton, is also the first installment of this beloved animated franchise without the original voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Don Ricklesand Estelle Harris originated the roles of the happy plastic couple in that first film from 1995. They continued to play the characters up until their deaths, including in various video game offshoots and shorts. Rickles died at 90 in 2017, and Harris' death followed in 2022 at 93.

In the case of the late stand-up comedian, known for his brand of insult comedy, Rickles did not record a new voice performance forToy Story 4. With his family's permission, Pixar combed through "25 years of everything we didn't use," including material from past films and theme park attractions, to piece together a new recording.

Stanton, who began work onToy Story 5a few years later in 2022, didn't have that same luxury. He was then tasked with recasting both roles for the next sequel (in theaters June 19).

"We just made sure that their families were okay with it," the filmmaker and Pixar's Vice President of Creative— who previously directedA Bug's Life, the twoFinding Nemofilms, andWALL-E— tellsEntertainment Weekly. "They understood that we have to keep the characters going, but we wanted their blessing because we wanted to honor the time that they had devoted to the characters. And, in a way, we are still honoring them by making sure they sound like that."

The job was searching for "sound-alikes," Stanton says — meaning voice actors who could sound like Rickles and Harris. Pixar found them in Jeff Bergman, the new Mr. Potato Head, and Anna Vocino, the new Mrs. Potato Head. "I was shocked," Stanton says. "They both just nailed it."

Toy Story 5was inspired by that pivotal age in a child's life when they find it's not so cool to play with toys anymore. Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) is now 8 years old and having trouble making friends as the last kid on her block who still plays. Everyone else seems to be consumed with screens. So her parents gift her Lilypad (Greta Lee), a smart device that sends Bonnie's room full of toys into chaos.

In a separate interview,Tom HanksandTim Allen, who return as Woody and Buzz Lightyear among the star-packed cast, reminisce about Rickles.

"He was much like his character, kind of an angry man," Allen says before channeling the voice of the comic: "'What do you know about World War II?!'"

"I took my kids to seeToy Story 2— I think it was that," Hanks recalls. "Estelle was there...A bunch of the cast got together in a theater and watched it. I took my boys. My youngest then was 15 years old [Truman Theodore Hanks], and I said, 'Come on, guys. You gotta meet Don Rickles.'" Hanks, too, then does his Rickles impression: "'Truman, huh? You're the kid? How old are yah? How old are yah? ... 'Bout to turn 16, huh? Well, get yourself some broads and live it up.' And then he wandered off. And they still talk about that day they met Don Rickles."
