  • Now, as an adult, Jackelyn co-hosts the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast with her dad

Howie Mandelrevealed that his daughter once campaigned to name her baby brotherMichael Jacksondue to her love of the late pop icon.

The comedian, 70, recently caught up exclusively with PEOPLE at theMichaelpremiere in Hollywood, Calif. During the conversation, he shared thathis eldest daughter,Jackelyn Shultz, asked to name her then-unborn baby brother after the King of Pop when she was a kid.

“My daughter — who is now 41 — and I were obsessed with Michael Jackson,” he said. “When she was 4 years old, [she] wanted my son, [Alex Mandel], who's 36 — when my wife was pregnant with him — she wanted us to name our son Michael Jackson.”

TheAmerica's Got Talenthost went on to say that he once brought Shultz to meet the late pop star, who died in 2009at the age of 50. However, she was too starstruck to speak.

“We took her to meet him one day and she just couldn't talk, and she was terrified. And he was so sweet and wonderful with her,” Howie recalled.

“So it was an epic time where I wanted her to know that that's Michael Jackson and not her brother,” he added jokingly.

Howie and Shultz's father-daughter connection has extended into adulthood as the pair co-host theHowie Mandel Does Stuffpodcast, which they started during the pandemic.

In 2021,Howie told PEOPLEthat the project started as an endeavor to connect with one another.

"It came out of a necessity of trying to connect with my child. We spend hours a day trying to make each other laugh,” he said at the time.

"There were a lot of control issues about me being safe, like, where was I, what did I get into, what did I touch?” Shultz said during the same 2021 interview with PEOPLE.

“He was strict. And there was a lot of hovering. We had trouble getting along in those times,” she admitted.

However, Shultz, who is also a television personality, said that it was extremely helpful having a parent who had her same condition.

"My dad is very open aboutgoing to therapyand erasing the stigma. Whenever I was upset or sad or having a bad day, I knew I could reach out,” she recalled.

Shultz went on to say that their relationship "couldn't be closer” now.

Spirit Airlines shutting down after failed effort at government rescue deal

Traveler arrives for Spirit Airlines flight, learns the company has shut down 02:57

CBS News

Spirit Airlines announced early Saturday morning that it was ceasing operations after the budget carrier failed to secure a$500 million federal bailout.

Spirit Aviation Holdings, the airline's parent company, said in a news release that it "regretfully announced" that it had "started an orderly wind-down of operations, effective immediately."

"All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and Spirit Guests should not go to the airport," the airline said, adding that it would automatically process refunds for any flight that was purchased through the airline with a credit or debit card.

Department of TransportationSecretary Sean Duffy said Saturday that Spirit has a reserve fund to refund tickets to the original form of payment for travelers whose flights have been cancelled. People who booked with a third party, like a travel agent, should contact their point of purchase, Duffy said. The airline hasset up a websiteto answer questions regarding the shutdown process.

Some of Spirit's bondholders, including Ken Griffin's Citadel and Ares Management Corp., had opposed the deal, U.S. officials previously told CBS News. Duffy said that a "creditor issue" ultimately prevented a rescue plan.

"In March 2026, we reached an agreement with our bondholders on a restructuring plan that would have allowed us to emerge as a go-forward business," Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in Saturday's statement. "However, the sudden and sustained rise in fuel prices in recent weeks ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company."

Rising prices left "no choice," airline says

The Florida-based airline, which has filed twice for bankruptcy since 2024, recently faced surging costs injet fueldue tothe Iran war.

The "recent material increase in oil prices" brought on by the Iran war and "other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit's financial outlook," the airline said in its statement. "With no additional funding available to the Company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down."

Duffy disputed this version of events, highlighting Spirit's bankruptcy filings.

"Spirit was in dire straits long before the war with Iran," Duffy said, adding that the airline's low-cost model "wasn't working."

The Trump administration's proposed bailout would have given the U.S. government a90% stake in the airline. Spirit's cash reserves had dwindled in recent days as talks with the government broke down, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions. Duffy said President Trump "was like a dog on a bone trying to figure out a way to keep Spirit afloat," but that "in the end, a deal couldn't be reached."

The airline industry faces higher costs due to rising energy prices, prompting carriers to raise fares and cut unprofitable routes. A new Deutsche Bank forecast predicts U.S. passenger airlines' annual fuel bill increasing $24 billion, relative to a forecast made before the start of the Iran war. While the bank believes airlines will be able to generate $14 billion more in revenue to offset those costs, they predict airlines will earn $8.4 billion less than previously expected.

By the time of Spirit's first bankruptcy filing in November 2024, the company had lost more than $2.5 billion since the start of 2020. In 2025, Spirit cut almost 4,000 jobs and 200 underperforming routes, ending the year with about 7,500 employees, including 2,000 pilots and 3,000 flight attendants, according to its latestannual report.

Spirit again filed for bankruptcy in August 2025 and disclosed in a regulatory filing that it had "substantial doubt" about its ability to continue operating.

"No frills" flying

Liquidating Spirit will bring an end to an airline known for its bright yellow planes and rock-bottom fares. The company's roots go back to 1983, when the airline wasspun offfrom a trucking company. Initially called Charter One, the airline rebranded in 1992 as Spirit Airlines and added more planes and routes. The company shifted to a "no frills" approach to travel in 2007, according to its union.

Trump administration officials were told that Spirit would wind down operations within 24 hours, CBS News learned Friday from people familiar with the matter. They confirmed that the White House would not make a last-ditch effort to save the airline.

When President Trump was asked about a bailout for Spirit Airlines on Friday, he said, "Well, I guess we're looking at it. If we can do it, we'll do it, but only if it's a good deal."

Davis in his statement thanked the Trump administration and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick for "their extraordinary efforts to try to preserve jobs and service across the country."

Spirit flew to more than 40 cities in the U.S., with a main hub at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, and had international routes to the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Industry reaction

Reactions to Spirit's announcement came fast on Saturday. United Airlineslaunched a webpageproviding capped fares to Spirit customers. Southwest Airlines, JetBlue and Delta Airlines also announced reduced fares for affected Spirit travelers, according to the Department of Transportation.

To alleviate concerns about higher prices, some airlines will continue to offer reduced fares on former high-volume Spirit routes for all passengers, the department said.

"This is the airline industry stepping up and trying to provide relief as Spirit is going to go through this liquidation," Duffy said.

American Airlines, which serves 70 of the 72 airports Spirit flew from, said it was "reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity," including larger aircraft and adding flights on popular routes. The airline also said it was working to provide transportation for Spirit employees who had been displaced while working.

American Airlines said it was preparing to launch a jobs page specifically for Spirit staff members. United Airlines will launch a similar effort, the Department of Transportation said.

How “Toy Story 5” recast Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head after the late Don Rickles and Estelle Harris (exclusive)

Toy Story 5 marks the first film without Don Rickles and Estelle Harris as the voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Key Points

  • Director Andrew Stanton talks through the process of recasting the characters with Jeff Bergman and Anna Vocino.

  • Tom Hanks shares the story of how his kids met Rickles for the first time.

Toy Story 5, in addition to being the firstToy Storymovie directed byPixarcreativeAndrew Stanton, is also the first installment of this beloved animated franchise without the original voices of Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head.

Don Ricklesand Estelle Harris originated the roles of the happy plastic couple in that first film from 1995. They continued to play the characters up until their deaths, including in various video game offshoots and shorts. Rickles died at 90 in 2017, and Harris' death followed in 2022 at 93.

In the case of the late stand-up comedian, known for his brand of insult comedy, Rickles did not record a new voice performance forToy Story 4. With his family's permission, Pixar combed through "25 years of everything we didn't use," including material from past films and theme park attractions, to piece together a new recording.

Stanton, who began work onToy Story 5a few years later in 2022, didn't have that same luxury. He was then tasked with recasting both roles for the next sequel (in theaters June 19).

"We just made sure that their families were okay with it," the filmmaker and Pixar's Vice President of Creative— who previously directedA Bug's Life, the twoFinding Nemofilms, andWALL-E— tellsEntertainment Weekly. "They understood that we have to keep the characters going, but we wanted their blessing because we wanted to honor the time that they had devoted to the characters. And, in a way, we are still honoring them by making sure they sound like that."

The job was searching for "sound-alikes," Stanton says — meaning voice actors who could sound like Rickles and Harris. Pixar found them in Jeff Bergman, the new Mr. Potato Head, and Anna Vocino, the new Mrs. Potato Head. "I was shocked," Stanton says. "They both just nailed it."

Toy Story 5was inspired by that pivotal age in a child's life when they find it's not so cool to play with toys anymore. Bonnie (Scarlett Spears) is now 8 years old and having trouble making friends as the last kid on her block who still plays. Everyone else seems to be consumed with screens. So her parents gift her Lilypad (Greta Lee), a smart device that sends Bonnie's room full of toys into chaos.

In a separate interview,Tom HanksandTim Allen, who return as Woody and Buzz Lightyear among the star-packed cast, reminisce about Rickles.

"He was much like his character, kind of an angry man," Allen says before channeling the voice of the comic: "'What do you know about World War II?!'"

"I took my kids to seeToy Story 2— I think it was that," Hanks recalls. "Estelle was there...A bunch of the cast got together in a theater and watched it. I took my boys. My youngest then was 15 years old [Truman Theodore Hanks], and I said, 'Come on, guys. You gotta meet Don Rickles.'" Hanks, too, then does his Rickles impression: "'Truman, huh? You're the kid? How old are yah? How old are yah? ... 'Bout to turn 16, huh? Well, get yourself some broads and live it up.' And then he wandered off. And they still talk about that day they met Don Rickles."

The 9 best game shows streaming on Netflix

Game shows are among the more enduring television programs since the medium's inception, providing the thrill of competition as contestants (typically strangers) face off to win prizes. While game shows rarely diverge from their set formula, there's a certain comfort in their predictability, with bold personalities from hosts and participants alike providing enough variety to keep them from becoming stale.

Netflix is home to numerous game shows, from light-hearted cooking contests likeThe Great British Baking ShowandNailed It!to strategy-based competitions likeThe Devil's PlanandThe Mole. The game show genre is vast and versatile, with a little something for every kind of viewer.

Ahead, we've narrowed down Netflix's offering of game shows to the nine best, each of them highly bingeable.

Blown Away(2019–2024)

It’s easy to scoff at how little reality is left in reality TV. That's not the case withBlown Away, though; the game show pits 10 glassblowers against each other for industry-specific prizes like an artist residency at the Corning Museum of Glass, and each contestant brings some major skills to the table. That emphasis on craft adds a captivating element to the competition because even if you dislike the personalities involved, it's impossible not to marvel at their amazing creations.—Chris Snellgrove

The Devil's Plan(2023–present)

Various contestants on 'The Devil’s Plan'Credit: Netflix

The Devil's Planhas a little bit of everything. This South Korean series alternates between competitive and collaborative contests, and challenges run the gamut from board games and card games to memory tests and social deduction. There can only be one winner, though, and there's plenty of drama stemming from how players spend their "pieces" (in-game currency) and even break ties to determine who among them gets sent to a virtual jail. Of course, the couch may become your own self-imposed prison once you begin properly binge-watching.—C.S.

Floor Is Lava(2020–2022)

Most children have playfully leaped between furniture to avoid touching the ground (and, in their minds, escape certain death).Floor Is Lavabrings that imagined fantasy to life by making contestants navigate difficult obstacle courses overflowing (literally) with red goo that simulates lava. The show adds some of its own rules (like the need to snag an exit pass to complete the course), but for the most part, it's a perfectly gonzo recreation of the original game, and the whimsical design leads to some surprisingly intense competitions.—C.S.

The Great British Baking Show(2010–present)

The Great British Baking Showmight be the most relaxing contest ever televised. Eschewing the bitter fighting and melodrama typical of other reality programs, this friendly competition instead features lighthearted hosts and hopefulcontestants who only fight for glory(and a coveted cake stand). There are no misleading edits or false countdowns here, just good bakers trying to do their best. Such an approach naturally elicits warm fuzzies, making for a sublime streaming pleasure.—C.S.

Is It Cake?(2022–present)

Is It Cake?may be the game show manifestation of a meme, but that doesn't keep it from being seriously entertaining. As the name implies, the series is all about chefs baking desserts that look like ordinary objects. Their goal is simple: to fool celebrity judges who must determine which of the objects placed in front of them is, in fact, cake. Even after watching them get made, it often feels downright impossible to believe some of these items are secretly sweet treats.—C.S.

The Molerevival (2022–present)

For reality TV scholars,The Molewas one of the gold standards of the reality competition boom of the early-2000s. Each season featured contestants participating in missions to acquire money for the Prize Fund, which was awarded to the winner at the game's end. The twist? The producers hired one of the contestants to act as a mole, sabotaging the missions, and the contestant who knew the least about their identity at the end of each episode was sent home. Netflix revived the beloved series in 2022 with new host Alex Wagner, with two seasons available to stream on the platform. —Kevin Jacobsen

Nailed It!became a viral sensation because its producers realized therealappeal of cooking competitions: watching people fail spectacularly. On this Netflix game show, (extremely) amateur chefs do their best to recreate Pinterest-worthy sweets, and the varied results inspire more belly laughs than belly rumbles. Fortunately, hostsNicole Byerand Jacques Torres keep things nice and light, and it always feels like they are laughingwiththe contestants rather than at them.—C.S.

The originalSquid Gamepainted an appropriately bleak portrait of capitalism by showing financially struggling contestants competing for cash, even though all but one of them will die. Eyebrows initially furled at the thought of turning the dystopian premise into a real game show, butSquid Game: The Challengeworks surprisingly well within its limitations. The game's stakes aren’t life and death like in the fictional series, butas EW's critic put it, "Producers intensify the psychological pressure...Selflessness usually isn't rewarded, nor does selfishness guarantee safety, and it’s fascinating to watch the unexpected ways these opposing sentiments come into play."—C.S.

We were admittedly a little sad to discover thatUltimate Beastmasterhad nothing to do with the wildBeastmasterfilms from the '80s and '90s. Still, this game show has its own animalistic appeal as we watch contestants compete against one another on "the Beast," an ever-changing obstacle course meant to challenge their physical prowess. • She explains that her children’s interest in meditation grew from watching her prioritize it in her own life

  • The boy mom of four says she hopes meditation becomes a lifelong tool for her kids to use when needed

Miranda Kerr's healthy lifestyle habits are rubbing off on her kids.

While chatting exclusively with PEOPLE at the Living Beauty Cancer Foundation's 2026 Annual Spring Luncheon on Wednesday, April 29, the model and entrepreneur, 43, revealed that meditation practices play a big role in her overall healthy lifestyle. Kerr, who's amom of four boys, shares that her love for the "incredible tool" has rubbed off on her 15-year-old son, Flynn.

"Meditation for me has been such an incredible tool, and I learned when I was 17 how to meditate, and I've been more religious about it probably in the last year than ever," she tells PEOPLE. "I don't have the luxury of having 20 minutes twice a day, but I do have the luxury right now of fitting it in the morning before the kids wake up."

"I've taught the kids, [and] they have their own mantra that they were given by my Vedic meditation teacher, and she sat with them. We did a little meditation. She did her little ceremony when we did a meditation together for my 6, 7, and 15-year-old," she explains. "And my 15-year-old is pretty consistent with it. He finds it really grounding and helpful."

Kerr welcomed her son Flynn with ex-husbandOrlando Bloomin January 2011. The former couple was together from 2010 to 2013 before Kerrtied the knotwith husbandEvan Spiegelin 2017. Kerr and Spiegel have since welcomed three kids together — son Hart, who was born in May 2018, and son Myles, who was born in October 2019, followed by Pierre in February 2024.

The proud mom shared that meditation is something she wants all of her kids to have in their toolkit, explaining that their connection to it comes from watching her prioritize it in her life.

"The thing about kids is that they watch what you do. They don't really necessarily listen to what you say, but they see your actions. When [Flynn] sees me daily doing my meditation and the benefits that that gives me, he's like, 'Oh, that's interesting. I'd like to try that,' " she says. "And he actually had a little friend group who, after he learned, another six of his friends learned as well, and he went together with them when they got their mantra, and they learned, and then they all did a meditation session together."

"I'm sure it'll be something that he will lean on more in certain times of his life, but it's just a good thing to have in their toolkit," she adds.

Later in the conversation, the doting mom shared the one thing she plans to do to celebrate herself on Mother's Day.

"Honestly, I just want to be having a cup of tea in bed. That's a real luxury to me," she says. "I do have this thing about having a cup of tea in bed and watching the sunrise. I love it with my kids in the bed. So that's a real treat."
