Pope Leohas expressed opposition to the war in favor of peace negotiations and said in an April 10 social media post that those who are disciples of Christ are “never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.”

Look back as Pope Leo marks his first year as pontiff

On April 14, Vance, a Catholic convert who describes himself as deeply religious, addressed a Turning Point USA rally audience in Georgia. While saying he welcomed the pope commenting on immigration and abortion, he suggested the pope’s opposition to political leaders wielding the sword would have meant opposing U.S. liberation of France and concentration camps during World War II.

“I like that the pope is an advocate for peace. I think that’s certainly one of his roles," Vance told the gathering. "On the other hand, how do you say that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword?”

The April 15 statement from the bishops’ conference committee directly addressed those remarks, noting that a tenet of the church’s "just war" tradition teaches that nations “can only legitimately take up the sword” in self-defense after peace efforts have failed.

“To be a just war, it must be a defense against another who actively wages war, which is what the Holy Father actually said,” the statement said, quoting the pope’sMarch 29 homilyat St. Peter’s Square in Rome: “He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.”

On April 7, after Trump’s Easter Sunday threats to annihilate Iranian infrastructure, Pope Leo called such rhetoric “truly unacceptable.”

Pope Leo XIV speaks to reporters on the Iran war in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, on April 7, 2026.

“When Pope Leo XIV speaks as supreme pastor of the universal Church, he is not merely offering opinions on theology,” the committee statement said. “He is preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ. The consistent teaching of the Church is insistent that all people of goodwill must pray and work toward lasting peace while avoiding the evils and injustices that accompany all wars.”

What to Know About the Latest Allegations of Sexual Misconduct Against Eric Swalwell

Eric Swalwellmay have resigned from Congress, but the scandal thatforced him to vacate his House seatand end his bid forCalifornia governorcontinues to grow.

On Tuesday, former ‌model and fashion software company owner Lonna Drewesclaimed to reportersin a news conference that Swalwell raped her in a hotel in 2018, adding to others’ previous allegations of sexual misconduct by the Democratic politician.

“He raped me and he choked me,” Drewes said. She added that she stands with the other women who spoke out and that she will report the incident to law enforcement.

After Drewes went public, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, in astatementto themedia, said its Special Victims Bureau opened an investigation into a woman allegedly being sexually assaulted by Swalwell in July 2018 in West Hollywood.

“Once the investigation is completed the investigators will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration,” the Department statement read.

Drewes’ allegations against Swalwell echo those from multiple women, including a case first reported by theSan Francisco Chronicle, which involved an unnamed former staffer who accused him of sexual assault.CNNalso reported on the case, as well as three other women who described separate instances of Swalwell’s alleged misconduct. TIME has not independently verified the allegations.

Amid the controversy, Swalwell has acknowledged some past “mistakes in judgment,” but denied the allegations of misconduct. His camp vowed to legally challenge the accusations and has sent cease-and-desist letters to some of his accusers.

Sara Azari, representing Swalwell legally, said in a Tuesday statementthat the “deeply offensive” accusations are a “calculated and transparent political hit job designed to destroy the reputation” of the Democratic politician, and she questioned the allegations’ timing, nature, and what she claimed to be a “coordinated rollout.”

Swalwell’s resignation from the House marks a stunning and rapid fall from his status less than a week ago, when he was among the top contenders in the race to succeed California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The state is set to have primaries in June, but the allegations have eroded support for his bid from fellow Democrats.

Newsom on Tuesdayannounceda special election to fill Swalwell’s vacated seat for the state’s 14th congressional district on Aug. 18.

‘I thought I died’

In the press briefing, Drewes claimed that she had contact with Swalwell three times. She said he offered Silicon Valley connections for her firm and had invited her to two public events. She added that at the time, the two talked politics as she was considering running for the Beverly Hills City Council.

On the third encounter, Drewes claimed Swalwell spiked her glass of wine. Before a political event, Swalwell had allegedly invited her to his hotel room to retrieve documents, but the drink had by then left her “incapacitated.”

“I couldn’t move my arms or my body,” Drewes said. While Swalwell allegedly choked her, she claimed she lost consciousness. “I thought I died.”

Drewes asserted that she did not consent and would not have consented to sexual activity with Swalwell and that the incident had impacted her mental health severely. She added that the delay in taking action was driven by “fear of his political power, his background as an attorney, and his family law enforcement ties.”

How Swalwell’s resignation ‘vindicated’ victims

After Swalwell’s resignation, Ally Sammarco, one of the accusers CNN spoke to for its report, toldCBS Newsthat she feels “vindicated” with the development. “He was pushed into a corner, essentially, because they were planning to expel him,” Sammarco said of his resignation, “so I think he did that to save face a little.”

CNN andCBS Newshave also spoken to another accuser, Annika Albrecht, who claimed to have met Swalwell in Washington D.C. while in college. Albrecht told CBS News that Swalwell offered to mentor her. She said Swalwell asked the students to create a group chat, and soon added her on Snapchat.

Albrecht’s initial exchanges with Swalwell were about politics, but they then turned flirtatious. At one point, Swalwell “invited” her to a hotel to meet, to which she stopped responding to him on Snapchat.

“It was very clear what the connotation was,” she told CBS News. “What I keep thinking back to is how lucky I am that I didn’t go to that hotel.”

Albrecht, said of Swalwell’s resignation, “For me, justice won’t be until he can’t ever harm a woman ever again, and he has faced the consequences for the women that he has harmed.”

Swalwell resigned amid threats of expulsion against him andRep. Tony Gonzales (R, Texas), who was dogged by a separate controversy—an affair with his former staffer who later died by suicide. Gonzales also resigned Tuesday.

Many of Swalwell’s political peers have since distanced themselves. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D, Ariz.), who chaired Swalwell’s brief 2020 presidential campaign, acknowledged to reporters Tuesdayhis friendship with the California politician but that he “lied to all of us.” Gallego also denied having any knowledge of Swalwell’s predatory behavior, sexual assault, or harassment, though he said that he asked Swalwell about related rumors.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, Calif.), one of the Democratic Party’s most influential leaders, called Swalwell’sresignationmove a “smart decision,” and she asserted that she knew nothing of the accusations before the reports came out. Pelosi, when she was Speaker, hadelevated Swalwell to coveted House positions, anddefended him in a previous, unrelated issue.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, N.Y.)told reportersthat Congress was at a “resetting point” after Swalwell’s and Gonzales’ resignations, and that the incident has shown that the U.S. has become “acclimated” to similar incidents of sexual abuse and harassment from people in power.

“I don’t think our work is done,” she said. “I think that a lot of the underlying structures that silence victims of sexual harassment and abuse still exist.”

  • He returned for Survivor: Micronesia, but was voted off first

  • He has since appeared on E!'s House of Villains

Jon “Jonny Fairplay” Daltonis one of the most notorious villains inSurvivorhistory.

During his first season,Pearl Islands, Fairplay becamea controversial figureon the CBS reality show after he and his friend lied about his grandmother's death so other contestants would let him win a reward challenge. However, in real life, Fairplay's grandmother was alive and at home “watching Jerry Springer."

“[He's] completely despicable, [but] it was actually fun to work with Fairplay on the show because he's a producer's dream,” longtimeSurvivorhost and executive producerJeff ProbsttoldEntertainment Weeklyin February 2005.

For his part, Fairplay is proud of his antics. “The ‘Dead Grandma' lie is still considered one of the greatest moves in the history of not justSurvivor, but reality television as a whole,” he toldEntertainment Weeklyin November 2020.

So, where is Jonny Fairplay now? Here's everything to know about theSurvivorvillain's life today.

What happened to Jonny Fairplay onSurvivor: Pearl Islands?

Survivorfans first met Fairplay onPearl Islandsin 2003, which was the seventh season of the hit competition show. He made a splash by lying about his grandmother's death with the help of his friend, Dan a.k.a. "Thunder Dan," who appeared during the family visit episode.

In the infamousmoment, when Dan showed up, Fairplay asked, "How's Grandma?" Dan solemnly responded, "She died, dude."

In response, the other contestants let Fairplay win the reward challenge, forcing them to move to a separate beach without food or shelter.

In a subsequent confessional, Fairplay explained his rationale for the move, saying, "This is a game for a million dollars. I have one chance in my life at this. You should take every single advantage possible. If you don't, you're a fool."

Dan added that he and Fairplay had cooked up the plan over the phone just before Fairplay left to filmSurvivor.

Ultimately, Fairplay made it to the final three, when Lillian "Lill" Morris chose to takeSandra Diaz-Twineto the end over Fairplay after winning the final immunity challenge.

“Lill decided that she would guarantee the winner by letting Sandra go to the final two. She didn't give the jury the opportunity to choose a winner,” Fairplay claimed toEntertainment Weekly. “I think that's kinda crappy. But I also think that's why we now have a final three.”

Diaz-Twine indeed went on to win the series and become one of only two two-timeSurvivorwinners alongsideTony Vlachos.

Fairplay was thrilled with how he was portrayed on the show, despite receiving criticism for some of his more controversial moves.

“It was me,” he toldEntertainment Weekly. “My heroes growing up were Roddy Piper and Ric Flair. I got to bring all of their villainy to the world of reality TV.”

With his villainous moves and signature blond curls, Fairplay made a splash on TV. But just a year later, Probst claimed he was “done with Fairplay” after he got into an argument with the host's brother at the 2004Survivor: Vanuatufinale afterparty and was subsequently banned from allSurvivorevents, perEntertainment Weekly.

“He's an absolute jackass whose actions ... pissed me off so much that he's banned from any event that I'm at from now on,” Probst said.

However, Fairplay was invited to appear on season 16,Micronesia — Fans vs. Favorites, in 2007 — though not by Probst's choice.

"My first vote was we don't need him,” the host said. ”Send him home. Make a point that there is a level of participant that we don't need on this show. CBS said, ‘That's interesting, Jeff — you can leave now.' So my vote doesn't count for anything.”

But Fairplay was ultimately sent home first after he encouraged his tribemates to vote him out so he could be with his then-girlfriend, Michelle Deighton, who was pregnant at the time.

“Michelle and I had made a pact right before I left that if anything were to go wrong — she was seven months pregnant at the time — for her not to tell CBS because I didn't want that to distract me from my game out there,” he told PEOPLE in February 2008. “When I got out there I was like, ‘That was stupid,' and I just started thinking the worst.”

Additionally, Fairplay claimed he had recently undergone surgery following a physical altercation with radio personality Danny Bonaduce at the FOX Reality Awards and was still in a lot of pain.

"I had the 15 hours of surgery, four root canals ... when I got out to the island, the pain was ridiculous," he said. “Jonny Fairplay just finally had his breaking point."
