A CENTURIES old piece of paper was donated to a Goodwill which an expert later estimated to be worth $18,000.

The piece of an original 1774 newspaper was found in a store in Woodbury, New Jersey, around 10 miles south of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The artifact was discovered at a Goodwill store in Woodbury, New Jersey[/caption]

This artifact was a copy of the December 28, 1774, Pennsylvania Journal and Weekly Advertiser newspaper, according to NJ.com.

The frayed paper was donated to the store in a wood and glass frame.

Officials said they were unable to trace and find the identity of the person who donated the item.

This artifact had several interesting old features on the page.

These included the "Unite or Die" snake logo from pre-revolutionary America and three posts that were signed by founding father John Hancock.

One of the paper's articles complained about the Boston Port Bill, which had closed the port as a punishment for the money lost during the Boston Tea Party, the year earlier.

The artifact was spotted by Heather Randall, the E-commerce manager for Goodwill of Southern New Jersey and Greater Philadelphia, in 2018.

Her team is tasked to spot the high-value items that have been donated to the chain's thrift stores.

"We weren't 100 percent sure of what we had," Randall said.

"We took the time to do some research on it to substantiate and appraise it."

The paper was appraised and valued at $18,000 by specialists at Cohasco, Inc., in Yonkers, New York.

Appraiser Robert Snyder labeled the artifact as "unquestionable authentic" and said he knew about three other copies from that day.

"Don't assume something fascinating and important isn't valuable even if you find it thrown out on the street," Snyder said.

The frame and paper were listed on the shopgoodwill.com site at a starting bid of $10,000 but it was taken down after no bids were made.

Some thrifters with a good eye have discovered huge finds

This colonial-era artifact was then acquired by The American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia in 2019, which Benjamin Franklin founded, according to the Associated Press.

The price paid for the historic piece was not publicly disclosed.

GOODWILL HUNTING

The U.S. Sun has previously reported on other high-value thrift store finds

One shopper bought two light fixtures for $7 but sold them on eBay for $2,600.

"Two Pullman train car electric wall sconces for $7," the lucky thrifter said.

"I wasn't sure what they were initially, but they had brass ram heads on them and looked very cool."

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Goodwill for comment.
