A CITY mayor has vetoed a proposed bill that would have seen drivers fined $50 for parking in their yard.

Jean Stothert, the Omaha Mayor, returned the parking measure to city officials to reconsider.

Jean Stothert branded the proposal in its current form confusing[/caption]

Earlier this month, lawmakers in the Nebraskan city passed a motion that would mandate drivers to park on gravel or a paved surface.

Residents found guilty of breaking the rules would have been slapped with a $50 fine.

They would've faced a court date and risked extra charges if they didn't attend, per The Omaha World-Herald.

Drivers who refused to comply could've seen their car towed.

The proposal was designed to crack down on drivers who parked on grass.

But Stothert said the proposal sparked confusion and raised questions, per a letter seen by The U.S. Sun.

"The ordinance creates confusion and raises questions," the Republican wrote.

"Vehicles with expired registrations must be included.

"I will not support an ordinance that does not include all vehicles."

She noted that unregistered cars parked on grass are unsightly.

The concept is not dead as Stothert said she would consider a revised motion.

Stothert was opposed to exceptions that were outlined in the original proposal.

The crackdown would not apply between 10am and 10pm on some holidays recognized by the city.

Homeowners with gravel driveways would also be exempt.

Ron Hug, a local lawmaker, revealed he intends to craft a new motion that he hopes Stothert will be able to support.

He previously told the ABC affiliate KETV that he had seen a significant deterioration in the appearance of local neighborhoods.

"It is the most common, consistent complaint I have received since I took office," Hug told lawmakers as reported by the Omaha World-Herald.

Hug warned parking issues have gotten worse in recent years.

"In the past two years, it has just mushroomed unbelievably," he told KETV.

But he acknowledged it can be difficult to fit all cars on driveways when families have big gatherings.

Critics of the measure were concerned about how it could impact low-income earners.

Some residents have claimed they have no option but to park in their front yard.

"I'll get a ticket every day," a defiant Carmen Johnson told KETV.

Other lawmakers were unsure how the rules would be enforced.

The fines would come into force on August 1 had the mayor signed the proposal into law.

But now the timetable seems to be unclear.
