“Love Boat” star Jill Whelan says producer tried to trick her into losing weight

Key Points

  • A teen at the time, Whelan recalls a producer tricking her during wardrobe fittings so she would feel pressured into weight loss.

  • Whelan, who's now 59, remembers being on a 400 calorie-a-day diet around the same time.

Actress Jill Whelan treasures the relationships she formed while making classic TV seriesThe Love Boat— mostly.

But she feels differently about late producer Douglas S. Cramer, whom she remembers as "a misogynist."

She recalled a particularly cruel move that involved her and fellow actress Lauren Tewes in a resurfaced interview on Steve Kmetko'sStill Here Hollywoodpodcast.

"We would come to a wardrobe fitting at a new season," Whelan said, "to get new uniforms and new evening gowns and new loungewear, and he would call the wardrobe department and tell them to buy everything one or two sizes smaller than we are so that we would come in and be embarrassed in fittings about things not fitting."

Cramer, one of the producers onThe Love Boat, died in June 2021. He was an accomplished producer, with credits includingDynasty,Hotel, andWonder Woman.

Whelan played Vicki Stubing, the daughter of Gavin MacLeod's Capt. Merrill Stubing, between 1978 and 1987, on the popular dramedy. During that time, she went from an 11-year-old kid to a young adult.

So, yeah, her body changed.

"I remember one time, and at that particular time I was going through puberty, and it's, you know, things happen in puberty," Whelan said. "I had gone to a fat farm, or I guess you would say today a spa. I went to a spa in Ojai and I had lost some weight and I was also working with some crazy doctor who had me on 400 calories a day."

She looked back at another difficult moment on the ABC series earlier this month.

"I remember one time when I was just 13 and quote unquote becoming a woman, the very day of," Whelan said on thePatrick Labyor Sheaux With Patrick Labyorteaux,"and I was doing a scene with Loni Anderson, and we were in the purser's lobby, and I used to get everything in one take. I didn't mess up like that. And I couldn't get this line out. I couldn't get it out."

Shestarted to cry, but her costar Tewes, who portrayed cruise director Julie McCoy, helped her when she "admonished the director and said something to the effect of 'leave her alone, this is not helping her at all, and all you're doing is making things worse.'"

Still, Whelan, who's now 59, has often spoken highly of most of her years on the ABC series and her colleagues.

The star's later career has included appearances on shows such asCriminal MindsandThe Bold and the Beautiful.

Correspondents' Dinner Shooting Revives Memories of Another Presidential Assassination Attempt—at the Same Hotel

Forty-five years before thealleged assassination attemptagainstPresident Donald Trumpat the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on Saturday night, a different President was shot at the same Washington, D.C., hotel.

Then-President Ronald Reagan was outside the Washington Hilton, the venue where the WHCA dinner is held each year, in 1981 when a man namedJohn Hinckley Jr.madean attempt on his life.

While thesuspectin Saturday’s shooting was apprehended before reaching the main ballroom where Trump, members of his Cabinet, and more than 2,000 other guests were seated, Hinckley got far closer to Reagan in his attack, firing a revolver at the President from just feet away and wounding him before he was ultimately subdued and arrested.

Hinckley, now 70, said that it was “spooky” to learn that Saturday’s shooting "took place at the same hotel as mine did" in an interview withTMZpublished on Monday.

He’s not the only one to see echoes of his attack in the recent shooting, which has sparked renewed attention to that history. Here’s what to know about the 1981 assassination attempt.

What happened in 1981

On March 30, 1981, Reagan was leaving the Washington Hilton with a Secret Service detail after speaking to members of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations. But before the President could reach his limousine where it was parked in front of the hotel, Hinckley, standing in a crowd of people waiting outside, opened fire.

The would-be assassin was tackled by a special agent within seconds, and Reagan was quickly pushed into the vehicle and driven away. But in that short window, Hinckley managed to get off six shots with his .22-caliber revolver—one of which, after ricocheting off Reagan’s limousine, hit the President under his left armpit, striking a rib, piercing a lung, and narrowly missing his heart.

Three others were also shot: White House Press Secretary James Brady in the head; Metropolitan Police Officer Thomas Delahanty in the back of the neck; and Special Agent Tim McCarthy, who stepped between Hinckley and the President, in the chest.

All four survived the attack. In the limousine, Special Agent in Charge Jerry Parr saw that Reagan was bleeding from his mouth and directed the vehicle to George Washington University hospital, where doctors operated to remove the bullet. The President spent 12 days in the hospital before returning to the White House.

Brady, who suffered a serious head wound that left him partially paralyzed, died in 2014 due to injuries sustained during the shooting, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Northern District of Virginia. His death was ruled a homicide.

TheFederal Bureau of Investigations(FBI) found evidence in Hinckley’s room at the Park Central Hotel that pointed to his motive: In a letter to the actress Jodie Foster, Hinckley had written that he was planning to kill Reagan as a demonstration of his love for her. The FBI also found magazine pictures of Foster in the room, along with pages of newspapers that detailed Reagan’s schedule.

On June 21, 1982, a jury found Hinckley not guilty by reason of insanity. He spent more than 30 years in a psychiatric institution before receiving full-time conditional release in 2016 to live with his mother in Virginia. He was fully released in June 2022.

“After 41 years 2 months and 15 days, FREEDOM AT LAST!!!” Hinckleywroteon X at the time.

Reagan's shooter and agent injured in the assassination attempt speak out

After the alleged attempt on Trump’s life, Hinckley said to TMZ that the Washington Hilton hotel should stop hosting large gatherings.

“Bad things keep happening” at the Hilton, Hinckley told the outlet, contending that it is “just not a secure place to hold big events.” He described the security at the hotel in 1981 as “lax.”

Meanwhile McCarthy, the special agent shot outside the Washington Hilton in the 1981 attack, praised the Secret Service response to the shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner, saying they did a “hell of a good job.”

“From what I can tell right now talking to my colleagues, it was handled pretty well. You never want something like this to happen. Security was tested, security responded, and at this point it did pretty well,” McCarthy said toNewsNation. “I’m pretty satisfied with what the Secret Service did on this occasion.”

  • "It’s a challenge, and it’s frustrating, and it’s exciting, and it’s rewarding, and just all the things," she told Us Weekly.

  • The singer's farm is home to goats, sheep, cows along with fresh fruits and vegetables.

Carrie Underwoodisn't chicken-talking about her farm life away from Hollywood.

TheAmerican Idoljudge, husband Mike Fisher, and sons Isaiah and Jacob moved to the 400-acre Tennessee farm in 2019, where they raise goats, sheep and chicken, along withgrowing vegetables, as she described in an interview withUs Weeklypublished Tuesday.

She called spending time on her farm the "polar opposite" of her day-to-day on the reality singing competition, and recent social media posts prove it.

“My goal is to just do as much as I can myself,” she admitted of what goes in to running a farm. “I love it. It’s a challenge, and it’s frustrating, and it’s exciting, and it’s rewarding, and just all the things.”

Underwood got candid about how opposite things are on and off the farm. “I go home, and I had to have talks with my family at one point, because I was like, ‘Okay, when I’m away, I’m like, Cinderella at the ball.’ I’m a princess, and it’s great,” she said.

"And then I come home, and I’m like, covered in dirt. I’m covered in poop. It’s just the polar opposite. I’m like, cleaning up after everybody and barefoot in the kitchen. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Underwood has been giving fans a look at farm life on social media. In November, she showed off massive tromboncino squash. In December, the singer posted about her homemade applesauce and playing with sheep instead of conquering a to-do list.

More recently in March, Underwood announced that she adopted lambs Magnolia (Maggie) and Murray.

"These mornings are so precious. It took a few days for them to willingly take the bottle…I’m still working on him," she wrote on Instagram. "Trying to be a good mama to these babies! ❤️🐑🐑."

Days later, she proudly showed off one of her baby sheep at feeding time.

"Little Miss Maggie finally figured out how to work the bottle! It was a big day! Sound up! 😊❤️🐑,"she wrote.

Underwood is confident she could be "self-sustained at home" through her farm, she toldFox News Digital.

"If I had all the time in the world, I would… not really need to go to the grocery store for too much. But it’s a lot of fun. You know, I love our chickens. We have cows, we have sheep, we have donkeys. We have horses. I have my garden, and it's a great way to connect with the earth. That's my contribution to the family," she said in her Fox interview published Saturday.

Sarah Ferguson's Stay at Luxury Resort Is Not What It Looks Like — Source

After months of hiding following her controversy,Sarah Fergusonwas finally spotted at a luxury ski resort in Austria. While many were surprised to think of the former royal spending money at a luxury resort, a source hinted that it is not what it looks like. As per the tipster, the former Duchess of York is believed to be living out of staff quarters to keep a low profile amid scandal.

Sarah Ferguson believed to be living out of staff quarters at Austrian resort, per source

Sarah Ferguson wasspotted for the first time in seven monthsat an exclusive resort in Austria amid the ongoing controversy. The former Duchess of York has been photographed at a luxury ski village in Austria, wearing a blue coat and pants with hair tucked in. Her outfit choice reflected that it was “carefully chosen to help her avoid being recognised.”

While it was earlier believed that the firmer royal is living in a luxurious place, sources have now toldRadarOnlinethat it might not be the case. Ferguson is believed to be living out of staff quarters at the resort to keep a low profile. “From the outside, it looks like she is staying in one of the resort’s most exclusive chalets, but the reality is far more modest. There is a growing belief that she is actually based in staff accommodation,” revealed a source.

The tipster added, “Living in staff quarters would allow her to maintain a presence at the resort” since scrutiny around her circumstances is intensifying. Moreover, with this move, she is “disappearing from view at a moment when attention on her is at its highest.” Thus, staying somewhere discreet in a basic accommodation reportedly helps the former royal member “avoid the kind of visibility” that would come if she had chosen a “more conventional luxury stay.”

Ferguson’s stay in the Alps is understood to be part of a broader pattern of temporary arrangements. “There has been a deliberate effort to obscure where she is and how she is living, and only a very small group of people know the full details,” noted the source.

‘Dances With Wolves’ actor Nathan Chasing Horse sentenced to life in prison for sexual assault

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nathan Chasing Horse has been sentenced to life in prison for sexually assaulting Indigenous women and girls.

Associated Press

A Nevada judge gave the “Dances With Wolves” actor his sentence Monday. Ajury had previously convicted himof 13 charges, mostly related to sexual assault. He was accused by three women, including one who was 14 when the assaults began. He was acquitted on some charges.

Accusers and their families told Judge Jessica Peterson they continue to suffer from the trauma caused by Chasing Horse and struggle with their faith after he exploited his position as a spiritual leader.

Chasing Horse, wearing his navy blue Clark County Detention Center uniform, stared straight ahead as victims read their statements. He denied the charges against him.

“This is a miscarriage of justice,” he told the judge on Monday.

Other charges in Canada are still pending

The sentencing wraps a yearslong effort to prosecute the former actor after he was first arrested and indicted in 2023. That initial arrest reverberated around Indian Country, with law enforcement in other states and Canada following up with more criminal charges. Those charges are still pending.

The British Columbia Prosecution Service said Chasing Horse was charged with sexual assault in February 2023, though the date of the alleged offense took place in September 2018 near Keremeos, a village about four hours east of Vancouver. In November 2023, the case paused due to Chasing Horse’s charges in the United States, but resumed the following year.

After all of Chasing Horse’s appeals have been exhausted, British Columbia prosecutors will assess next steps, Damienne Darby, communications counsel for the British Columbia Prosecution Service, said in an email.

A warrant against Chasing Horse remains outstanding in Alberta, the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service in Alberta said in a statement following Chasing Horse’s conviction in January. The Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service said that it is in contact with the Alberta Crown Prosecutors Office regarding the warrant.

January trial focuses on his role as spiritual leader

Chasing Horse was born on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, which is home to the Sicangu Sioux, one of the seven tribes of the Lakota nation. Following his appearance as the young Sioux tribe member Smiles a Lot in Kevin Costner’s Oscar-winning film “Dances With Wolves,” Chasing Horse traveled across Indian Country to attend powwows and perform healing ceremonies.

During his trial, Nevada prosecutors said Chasing Horse used his reputation as a Lakota medicine man to prey on Indigenous women and girls.

Deputy District Attorney Bianca Pucci told the jury that for almost 20 years, Chasing Horse “spun a web of abuse” that ensnared many women.

Jurors heard from three women who said Chasing Horse sexually assaulted them. The jury returned guilty verdicts on some charges related to all three.

Multiple victims described how they participated in his ceremonies or went to Chasing Horse for medical help.

Corena Leone-LaCroix, one of the victims, was 14 in 2012 when Chasing Horse allegedly told her the spirits wanted her to give up her virginity to save her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer. He then sexually assaulted her and told her that if she told anyone, her mother would die, according to Pucci. The sexual assaults continued for years, Pucci said. The Associated Press typically does not use the name of alleged sexual assault victims unless they come forward publicly, as Leone-LaCroix has.

Chasing Horse denied the allegations and his attorney questioned the main accuser’s credibility, calling her a “scorned woman.” His attorney had filed a motion for a new trial, arguing that a witness was not qualified to talk about grooming and that the statute of limitations had expired. That motion was denied.

Victims and their family members testified that they struggle with their faith as a result of Chasing Horse’s actions. The mothers of the victims said Chasing Horse betrayed their trust and abused sacred traditions.

“Even to this day I struggle to regain my faith and spirituality,” a victim’s mother said.

One victim said she still faces complications after suffering an ectopic pregnancy as a result of the assault and being forced to undergo surgery.

“I am choosing to see this moment as a fresh start. I will rebuild my life, reclaim my voice and continue fighting for the future I deserve,” one victim said.

Dr. Crystal Lee, CEO and founder of the organization United Natives, which offers services to victims of sexual abuse, said she hopes the victims find peace with the sentencing. Lee said Chasing Horse’s case shows the importance of holding high-profile perpetrators accountable, and believing the victims involved.

Chasing Horse used his status as an actor and medicine man to prey on victims, similarly to other faith leaders who abuse their power, Lee said.

“I think it makes us question who we trust and why we trust,” Lee said.
