A CONVICTED felon has been named as the armed suspect accused of killing four law enforcement officials as they attempted to serve a warrant.

The deadly standoff unfolded as officers with the US Marshals Task Force were serving a warrant at a home in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina, at around 1:30 pm on Monday.

However, as US Marshals were serving the documents, they were met with gunfire from a high-powered rifle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said.

Officers returned fire and fatally shot the armed suspect, identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal background, police said.

Hughes Jr. was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon, and two counts of felony flee to elude in Lincoln County, said Jennings.

Four law enforcement officials were struck by gunfire during the shootout.

The US Marshals confirmed three members of the task force were fatally shot.

HERO OFFICERS IDENTIFIED

Two officers were identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliot, who worked for North Carolina's Department of Adult Corrections.

The two served as probation/parole officers before joining the department's special operations and intelligence unit.

Poloche joined the intelligence unit in 2013, while Elliot joined in 2016.

The third was identified as 13-year veteran deputy US Marshal Thomas Weeks, 48.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Jennings said one of his officers died from his injuries at the hospital.

Six-year veteran Joshua Eyer died at the hospital surrounded by his wife and family, the police chief said.

"Officer Eyer was 6-year veteran with the CMPD, and I am truly grateful for his bravery, service, and ultimate sacrifice. He will never be forgotten, and we are forever indebted," Jennings posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"It was just last month I was in this very room, congratulating Officer Eyer for becoming officer of the month," Jennings said during the news conference.

"He certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens."

SECOND WAVE OF GUNFIRE

After a three-hour standoff, an armored police truck was finally able to breach the home, breaking windows and tearing through doorways.

But, as officers approached the residence, they were met by more gunfire from a second shooter inside the house.

Officials were able to negotiate with the other people in the house as two females exited the property and were arrested.

The relationship between the two women, one described as a 17-year-old, has not been determined.

Police have not disclosed who the second shooter was.

"We are very early in the investigation," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Jennings said.

"CMPD will lead this investigation, we still have a lot to uncover, a lot of questions that are not answered right now."

Four other Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were injured during the hail of gunfire.

The cops responded to the scene while trying to rescue the initial round of wounded officers.

The injured officers were identified as Chris Talley, Mike Giglio, Jack Blowers, and Justin Campbell.

"Unfortunately, this individual decided to greet them with gunfire, and it just turned into a tragic event for the officers who were originally out on the scene and the officers who responded to try and assist," Jennings told CNN.

The four wounded officers are in stable condition and are expected to survive.

Neighbors recall the wave of gunfire lasting for several minutes.

"I see, like, 50 police cars zooming in, and then I hear gunshots," Alex Rivera, who lives on a street nearby, told the Associated Press.

"Bless those officers and bless their families."

"Nobody should get killed over a warrant," said local William Cunningham, who served in the 1991 Operation Desert Storm in the Middle East.

President Joe Biden mourned the death of the officers, saying, "They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm's way to protect us.

"We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded."

"Our hearts are with the families and co-workers of officers in today's brutal attack, including two state Department of Adult Correction officers working with the US Marshal's Task Force who were shot and killed," said Roy Cooper, North Carolina's governor.

CHINA is set to send a robot spaceship up into space to explore the chilling dark side of the moon in the coming days.

The three-part journey will see China's extraordinary Chang'e-6 spacecraft embark on a mission to visit the moon's surface and gather enough data to allow astronauts to return by 2030.

President Xi Jinping is ramping up China's space mission to beat global competitors[/caption]

Chinese scientists are also hoping they will continue to run away with the world's space race by getting their team of expert space dwellers to build a moon base up there.

Sometime this week the Chang'e-6 is set to blast off and land on the untouched side of the moon that is permanently facing away from Earth.

The daring first mission will take 53 days and will be done completely through a relay satellite orbiting the moon.

Chang'e-6 is thought to be getting sent up to collect 2kg worth of rock and dirt samples from the surface of the moon.

The spacecraft will use an inbuilt mechanical scoop and drill.

Space expert and author Leonard David told Reuters: "If successful, China's Chang'e-6 mission would be a milestone-making event.

"The robotic reach to the Moon's far side, and bringing specimens back to Earth, helps fill in the blanks about the still-murky origin of our Moon."

Just a few days ago, the communist regime launched a three-member crew to its orbiting space station in a bid to push its ambitious space program.

The Shenzhou-18 spacecraft lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China atop a Long March 2-F rocket.

So far, China has managed to lay out a timeline for the seismic exploration attempt starting with the initial mission this week.

They have hopes to deploy a Chang'e-7 in 2026 and a Chang'e-8 in 2028.

Both of these missions will be done to further explore the moon's dark side and will use the satellite instead of being controlled by humans.

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

But by 2030, when China has managed to successfully pinpoint a potential water supply in space and built a rudimentary outpost with Russia they hope to have astronauts walking on the moon.

Something that hasn't been replicated since Apollo 17 back in 1972.

Any signs of water are expected to be found on the moon's south pole – a place described as the "golden belt" for lunar exploration by scientists.

However, the US and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are preparing their own mission to send humans to the moon even sooner.

They will be rocketing off in 2026, say the space specialists, under the Artemis programme where they will explore the South Pole.

The initial Chang'e expedition took place in 2007 with China battling against NASA ever since to find a way back up to the moon.

The spacecraft is set to carry payloads from France, Italy, Sweden, and Pakistan on board.

Chang'e-7 is preparing to launch with Russian, Swiss and Thai payloads as well.

It is believed to be landing on the northeastern side of the gigantic South Pole-Aitkin Basin – the oldest recognised crater in the solar system.

Every sample from the moon so far has been collected from the near side of the moon hence the desperation to be the first nation to embark over to the dark side.

CHINESE SPACE CONCERNS

NASA chief Bill Nelson has also been outspoken with his fears about China's activities in space.

He warned China may be hiding secret military projects in space as they look to claim the entire moon as their own territory.

Bill said: "My concern would be if China got there first and said, 'This is our territory, you stay out'.

"Obviously you don't want to interfere with each other but don't declare that this whole territory is suddenly yours."

China has denied the accusations as purely scientific.

Under President Xi Jinping's leadership, China has spent roughly £11.2billion on its ambitious space programme in 2023, according to Statista.

It comes as China is also preparing to bolster their space weapons by tripling its number of spy satellites in the next six years.

Experts warn the Communist regime could use them to support an invasion of Taiwan, with submarines firing missiles at targets that have been identified by the space tech.

In early March, scientists at the China National Space Administration revealed Chinese plans to build a Disneyland-sized lunar base with a CCTV system that's powerful enough to see activity on Earth.

SHOPPERS have been warned about a worrying scam that involves a text message impersonating Costco.

The sneaky trick, which could leave your bank details vulnerable, appears as a celebratory message, congratulating customers for being chosen to win a "special reward."

Shoppers have been urged to stay alert to the scam which could leave your bank details vulnerable[/caption]

It will then ask the recipient to answer "a few quick questions" with a time limit of a few minutes.

When customers go to click on the link, they are taken to a phishing site which will "often look identical to the legitimate website," scam expert Paul Bischoff told Readers Digest.

"Users are then tricked into giving up passwords, credit card numbers, and other private information," he explained.

The text scam, which can also appear in the form of a survey, is known as 'smishing,' a type of phishing attack that uses social engineering to get personal information about someone through texts.

And experts warn anyone who receives such a message to delete it immediately and report it as spam.

"The text might say you're 'only' responsible for a small shipping-and-handling charge to receive your gift," Monica Eaton, an expert on the financial consequences of scams and data theft, explained to Readers Digest.

"But this is a scam, and you shouldn't give them your financial data! They'll take as much money as they can get away with, and they won't stop until your account is drained dry."

To avoid falling victim to smishing, avoid clicking on links, and don't provide personal or confidential information to suspicious sources.

It's something to keep in mind for other scams too, with Bischoff warning recipients to "Never click on links or attachments in unsolicited messages."

"Always check the site's domain in email addresses and websites, and ensure the correct domain comes after the @ sign in an email and before the first single slash in a URL," he said.

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

Eaton, meanwhile, stressed that Costco has no part to play in any of the scams claiming to be them.

Costco "is a victim of these scams too," she said.

To help shoppers, the company has listed all the scams known to have targeted customers.

The 27-strong list, which can be found on the company's website, includes everything from USPS scams to gift card tricks.

Other Costco shoppers have reported falling victim to another listed scam about their store membership.

The fake email convinces customers their membership is about to expire and offers 90 days free by resigning.

But the website it leads to is used to steal personal information.

Shoppers, including Michael Brown, have easily fallen for the scam.

"It looked so real," Brown told NBC affiliate KYTV in Springfield, Missouri.

"When I clicked on it, they wanted all sorts of information. My bank card number, my address, my phone number.

"That's when I said no."

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.

No injuries were reported and once the spill was contained the store was deemed safe to reopen three hours later[/caption]

The chemical spill was due to a refrigerant leak, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Department, which reported the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Refrigerant, also known as Freon, is a chemical most commonly found in air conditioning systems and heating pumps.

Emergency services said that they learned of the leak at 2:06 pm.

The department's hazmat team was called to the scene shortly after to contain the spill.

The cause of the leak was determined to be due to a faulty air conditioning unit in the store.

The store had around 800 customers and 200 employees that needed to be evacuated.

Costco employees became aware of the chemical leak when one of them noticed "a white cloud moving through the store," CW affiliate KRON reported.

A medic was onsite but no injuries caused by the leak have been reported, according to officials.

Emergency services used fans to direct the chemical cloud through the store's open doors and ventilation systems so it could safely disperse outside, according to Victor Daniel, fire prevention captain for the department.

Once authorities contained the chemical spill, Daniel said hazmat collected "air samples" to ensure that the air was safe to breathe.

Representatives from Contra Costa Health then confirmed the store was safe to enter again.

At 5:32 pm, the district said firefighters had cleared the scene.

Once the emergency was contained, authorities turned over the investigation of the cause of the leak and repairing the unit to Costco's technicians, according to Daniel.

The store was shortly thereafter able to be reopened for business.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Costco for comment on the incident but has not yet heard back.

POISONING SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of refrigerant poisoning vary based on how much exposure a person experiences.

However, symptoms to watch for from mild refrigerant exposure can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, coughing, and irritation of the eyes, ears, and throat.

More severe poisoning symptoms include loss of consciousness, seizures, breathing difficulties, irregular heartbeat, and vomiting blood.

Accidental poisoning from a leaking appliance is rare, and is more likely to occur for people working on products that contain the chemicals or in facilities that use refrigerants, rather than the average consumer.

If the exposure occurs in a well-ventilated area like Costco's warehouse stores or involves a small amount in contact with skin, the risk of poisoning is minimal.

If if a person is showing signs of refrigerant poisoning they should call emergency services and Poison Control in the United States, which runs a 24-hour telephone guidance service for poisoning emergencies.

CVS shoppers are frustrated as more everyday essentials get placed behind barricades to curb theft.

But the drugstore is pushing back, insisting that locking up products is actually the retailer's last resort option.

In an effort to combat ongoing retail crime, stores have begun locking up common items.

Shoppers hoping to quickly grab a box of bandaids, a new toothbrush, or a can of disinfectant can expect to wait, as these items, and many more, remain locked behind anti-theft glass at stores like CVS.

And many customers aren't having it.

"I hate when I go in stores and everything gets f**king locked up like this," fumed one shopper in a recent YouTube video.

But higher-ups at retailers across the US aren't exactly thrilled about the constant crackdowns they're instituting to deter shoplifters.

"Locking a product is a measure of last resort," a spokesperson for CVS said in an email to the Los Angeles Times,

Several customers said they'd rather order items online than wait for an associate to unlock in-store cases.

Some shoppers suspect efforts to curb stealing and save stores money have actually hurt sales.

"Honestly I think it's a pretty fun new game to go into Walmart and see another thing locked behind glass that I'm now just gonna buy from Amazon," wrote Phil (@mrburgerboy) on X, formerly Twitter.

He claimed Walmart must be losing money because the shopping experience has been made "miserable" due to the retailer's anti-theft policies.

<!-- End of Brightcove Player -->

Joe Budano, the chief executive of a company that makes buttons notifying associates when to unlock items, told the Los Angeles Times customer frustration likely leads to a "10% to 25% reduction in sales" and referred to anti-theft glass as "the bane of retail."

And yet, it remains the best option, according to some experts, after a rocky year in record thefts.

Retail theft accounted for about $112.1 billion in overall losses, according to data from the 2023 National Retail Security Survey reported by Fox Business.

That number is up from $93.9 billion in losses in 2021 and $90.8 billion in 2020, according to the survey.

    </div> </div>

CVS STORES SLAMMED

The conversation continues as several CVS locations have been forced to close due to theft-related crimes.

The company announced it would close 10% of its locations across the US, with about 300 of its 900 planned closures happening this month, The U.S. Sun previously reported.

At some CVS locations, stealing has become so commonplace that workers say they're told to let thieves go.

Assistance from police is not an option, according to the workers, who say law enforcement won't step in unless the crime meets a certain threshold.

Meanwhile, a CVS in Navy Yard, DC was ransacked after a group of people stormed through, stealing and wreaking havoc throughout the store.

Despite employees trying to control the situation, chaos ensued, resulting in a massive amount of items stolen.

Two security guards were on duty at the time but were seen exiting the store during the incident.

Tommy Hinton won $225,000 on a scratch-off[/caption]

A routine pit stop proved to be a very fateful moment for Tommy Hinton of Mississippi when he bought a ticket for the Kentucky Lottery's 100X Scratch Off.

While taking his regular break at Pilot Travel Center in Madisonville, he bought three tickets.

The trucker decided to scratch them off right there and then in the store.

"One of the winning numbers was three and I saw I had the number three. I scratched it and I saw the amount," Hinton told Kentucky Lottery.

"I was speechless. I kept thinking, 'Oh no. No way. No way.'"

He then scanned the scratch-off on the ticket checker to confirm he had really won $225,000.

"I had this look on my face like, 'oh man,'" Hinton told lottery officials.

"The clerk asked me if I was okay and if I needed an ambulance.

"I said, 'No' and then showed her the amount on the machine. Her eyes popped out and were big as saucers."

However Hinton didn't get to take home the full jackpot.

After taxes, the prize was reduced to $162,000.

With his winnings, the driver plans to pay off bills, complete some home renovations, and give to his church.

"I plan to act like I don't have it," he said. "I'm blessed."

Meanwhile, Pilot Travel Center will receive $2,250 for selling the ticket.

OTHER LUCKY WINNERS

Hinton is not the only one to be amazed by an unexpected lotto win lately.

In Florida, Scottie Grant has claimed his second $1,000,000 scratch-off win in just six months.

"I'm back!" Grant said as he claimed his latest prize at the Florida Lottery headquarters.

He won both seven-figure sums on the 500X THE CASH game, which costs $50 per ticket.

On both wins, Grant got to keep $820,000 after paying federal taxes.

A man in Florida has stunned lottery officials by winning his second $1,000,000 prize in six months.

Scottie Grant of Escambia County claimed his seven-figure prize from the 500X THE CASH scratch-off game in May.

It came just six months since his prior win.

In December 2022, he won $1 million playing the very same scratch-off game.

"I'm back!" Grant said as he claimed his latest prize at the Florida Lottery headquarters.

Although he won $1,000,000 both times, he only received $820,000 each time.

That's because Grant chose to receive his prizes as lump sum payments, rather than take the full amounts in the form of annuity payments.

Florida does not tax lottery winnings, although Grant would have had to pay Federal income tax on his winnings both times.

The scratch-off wizard purchased his latest winning ticket at Circle Food Mart in Pensacola.

The 500X THE CASH game costs $50 per ticket, but features a top prize of $25 million.

MORE LOTTO LUCK

Grant is not the only lottery player who has enjoyed a stroke of luck lately.

One player in Illinois recently learned the value of checking his old tickets.

An anonymous winner was shocked to find out he was owed $1,000,000 from a Powerball draw held one month ago.

It was only when he looked at his old mobile tickets via the app that he saw a message that read: "You're A Winner!"

Over in South Carolina, another player decided to follow his gut and buy the same ticket as the person in front of him at a liquor store.

His intuition paid off and he ended up winning $200,000.

"It was like an out-of-body experience," the man told local NBC affiliate WYFF.

"I wouldn't have bought it if the customer in front of me hadn't."
