Virginia State Police are rolling out new speed camera tests throughout Interstate 81, according to local NBC affiliate WSLS-TV.

The agency said they're looking to test the machines by fall 2024.

Details of the new cameras are laid out in a recent Request for Proposal, according to the television station.

Dozens of temporary cameras will surveil drivers passing working construction areas along the roadway.

Drivers caught going 10 mph or more over the speed limit are subject to $100 fines.

The speeding tickets can be sent through the mail.

Speed capturing cameras are not new to some Virginia drivers.

School zones in Altavista and Wythe County are currently using speed enforcement cameras.

The speed cameras are preempted by a series of warning signs posted within a mile of the construction zone.

First, drivers will see an orange "photo enforced" warning sign posted under a speed limit sign.

After the first warning, a second sign will warn drivers about the camera's placement.

The cameras will turn on operations when construction employees work on the project.

State police said it is difficult to pull drivers over in a construction zone because of the limited shoulder space.

However, speed enforcement in the area is essential for worker safety.

Highway drivers have less time to react in a potentially dangerous situation because of their rate of speed.

The stretch of highway in Virginia sees nearly 50,000 daily drivers, according to the state's Department of Transportation.

I-81 is one of the state's most important shipping corridors, hitting 21 major cities.

The highway is undergoing a corridor improvement plan to strengthen the "safety and reliability" of the "critical portion of our nation's infrastructure," per the DOT.

Drivers have reported increased congestion along the route during the temporary construction period.

Nearly 40% of the daily drivers are delivery trucks and 18-wheelers, according to local road lawyers Marks & Harrison.
